Angioplasty

Angioplasty

Angioplasty is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat narrowed or blocked arteries, commonly caused by plaque buildup. It involves inserting a thin catheter into a blood vessel, typically in the wrist or groin, and guiding it to the affected area.

At the tip of the catheter is a small balloon, which is inflated to widen the artery by compressing the plaque against the arterial walls. In many cases, a stent, which is a tiny wire mesh tube, is placed in the artery to keep it open and maintain proper blood flow. Some stents are coated with medication to reduce the risk of the artery narrowing again. Angioplasty is most often performed to improve blood flow in the heart (coronary arteries), but it can also be used to treat blockages in other parts of the body, such as the legs or kidneys. This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, with a short recovery time, making it a common and effective treatment for cardiovascular conditions.
