Through the ages Varanasi or Benaras was also known variously as ‘Avimuktaka’ , ‘Anandakanana’, ‘Mahasmasana’, ‘Sudarsana’, ‘Surandhana’, ‘Brahma Vardha’, ‘Ramya’ and ‘Kashi’ or –“the city of light”, is one of the oldest living cities in the world.
